Today, we invite you to join us on an immersive journey that brings us closer to the rich culture and lifestyle of the indigenous people from the highland region.

The Atacameño people were known as skilled livestock farmers, agriculturalists, and fearless warriors who defended their lands. Our exploration begins at the historic site of “Pukara de Quitor”. This is a significant location where the community organized to combat and resist the impending European invasion.

Despite facing defeats, they heroically held out for over two decades. Our next destination is the Aldea de Tulor, a site unearthed in 1958 by the Jesuit priest Gustavo Le Peige, which showcases a typical Atacameño dwelling.

Descripción del Tour:

Today, we embark on a captivating journey through the footprints of the past in the heart of the desert, the driest place on Earth, to discover the origins of the invaluable Atacama culture.

Our Archaeological Tour in San Pedro de Atacama promises an exhilarating exploration of the ancient civilizations that once thrived in this mysterious region.

Today's adventure includes a visit to the "Pukará de Quitor", a pre-Inca construction covering 2.5 hectares. Situated at 2,440 meters above sea level and just 3 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama, it is perched on the slopes of a small hill, offering a strategic vantage point. Built with stone and adobe, these structures demonstrate the remarkable social organization of the Atacameños ancestors against the Spanish conquistadors and date back to the 12th century. They are now recognized as a National Monument.

We will have time to explore this historic site before heading to the Pueblo de Tulor, which is over 2,800 years old. Archaeology serves as an invaluable resource for understanding the ancient origins of this Atacama oasis, which has been inhabited since early human settlement.

It was Father Gustavo Le Paige who, in 1958, uncovered the first remains of the Village of Tulor, located 6 kilometers south of San Pedro de Atacama. This exceptional tour is often led by local residents who guide us through the early days and first inhabitants of San Pedro de Atacama. Tulor is a village constructed directly on the clay ground in the drainage area of the San Pedro River, eventually buried by the encroaching desert over time.

It is renowned for its striking architecture, featuring circular houses built of adobe that blend seamlessly with the surrounding desert landscape. As you wander through its streets and squares, you'll feel history come alive, immersing you in a culture that thrived in harmony with nature and relied on ingenuity to endure one of the world's most challenging environments.

Before concluding our historical tour, we will visit the Archaeological Museum of San Pedro "Father Gustavo Le Paige" located in San Pedro. It is named after a Jesuit priest who dedicated nearly his entire life to the discovery, collection, and study of the area's archaeological remains and the Licanantay people.

After this incredible cultural and historical experience, we will return to San Pedro, preserving the memories of everything we witnessed and learned today.

We await your visit; don't miss out!
